🔹 31 Mar - 4 April: M503 – Noise


Teaching Aims:

This course will help you to determine the significance of measurement data concerning the various standards for compliance.

Prior Knowledge and Understanding:

Prior Knowledge and Understanding There are no prerequisites required for this qualification, however, this course would be suitable for technicians and technologists who carry out measurements and testing in workplaces. Candidates are also expected to be aware of the general contents of The Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005 and Guidance on the Control of Noise at Work Regulations.

🔹 16-20 June: M505 - Control of hazardous substances


Teaching Aims:

The course aims to describe how exposure to hazardous substances arises in the workplace and to introduce the methodologies and technologies available to control exposures and thereby reduce risks to health.

Prior Knowledge and Understanding:

There are no prerequisites required for this qualification, however, this course would be suitable for technicians and technologists who conduct measurements and testing in workplaces. Candidates for this course are expected to be aware of the general contents of the Control of Substances to Health (COSHH) regulations, HSE Guidance Note HSG193 COSHH Essentials Easy Steps to Control Chemicals, HSE Guidance Note HSG258 controlling Airborne Contaminants at Work and HSE Guidance Note HSG53 Respiratory Protection at Work.

🔹 7-11 July: M502 - Thermal


Teaching Aims:

This course aims to provide you with a sound understanding of the effects of the thermal environment on people, and the means of assessing and controlling the risks associated with thermal stress.

🔹 22-26 Sept: M507 - Health Effects


Teaching Aims:

On completing the examination, you will be able to: 

  • Provide definitions of commonly used toxicological terms 
  • Describe the main routes by which hazardous substances can enter the body, and the factors which influence their absorption, distribution, storage and elimination 
  • Describe the main sources of information on hazardous substances and processes 
  • Describe the main features of the principal target organs affected by hazardous substances at work, and the factors which influence the degree of harm 
  • Describe the main routes of exposure and toxic health effects for hazardous substances commonly encountered in the workplace 
  • Carry out basic interpretation of the results from epidemiological studies 

Prior Knowledge and Understanding:

Awareness of the contents of the Control of Substances to Health (COSHH) regulations and The Chemicals (Hazard Information and Packaging for Supply) Regulations (CHIPS) especially with regard to labelling and safety data sheets.
