# MSA Chillgard 5000: Refrigerant Monitoring, Capabilities and Applications

**Shawcity**|27 October 2026

![](https://www.shawcity.co.uk/hubfs/chillgrd-blog.png)

A refrigerant leak in a chiller plant room may go unnoticed until cooling performance deteriorates, maintenance costs increase or an alarm is triggered. In enclosed mechanical spaces, a significant release can also create safety concerns, depending on the refrigerant involved and the ventilation available.

For facilities managers and refrigeration engineers, identifying leaks early can help limit refrigerant losses, support maintenance planning and provide an additional layer of protection for personnel.

The [MSA Chillgard 5000 Refrigerant Monitor](https://products.shawcity.co.uk/products/chillgard%C2%AE-5000-remote-display-copy) is designed for continuous refrigerant monitoring in mechanical equipment rooms and commercial installations. Using photoacoustic infrared technology and a centralised air-sampling system, it can monitor multiple locations within a plant room and communicate readings and alarms to building management systems.

This article examines how the Chillgard 5000 works, its technical capabilities, typical applications and the UK regulatory considerations involved in specifying refrigerant monitoring.

### Why Is Refrigerant Leak Monitoring Important?

Refrigeration and air-conditioning systems rely on refrigerants circulating through compressors, heat exchangers, valves and connecting pipework.

Leaks can develop around joints, seals, valves and other components, particularly as equipment ages or undergoes repeated operating cycles.

The consequences depend on the refrigerant, the amount released and the installation environment.

#### Occupational Safety

Some refrigerants can displace oxygen when released in sufficient quantities, particularly in enclosed or poorly ventilated spaces. Others present toxicity or flammability hazards.

The risks cannot be assessed from refrigerant concentration alone without considering the substance's properties and the conditions in the room.

Continuous monitoring can provide early warning of refrigerant accumulation, allowing personnel to investigate and follow established site procedures.

#### Environmental Impact

Many fluorinated refrigerants have a high global warming potential (GWP).

A release can therefore contribute to greenhouse gas emissions, even when the quantity lost is relatively small.

Identifying leaks early supports refrigerant containment and can help operators meet their environmental responsibilities.

#### Operational Performance

Loss of refrigerant charge can affect system efficiency, cooling capacity and equipment reliability.

An undetected leak may lead to repeated refrigerant top-ups, additional servicing and, potentially, unplanned downtime.

Continuous monitoring provides maintenance teams with information that may help them investigate developing leaks before significant charge loss occurs.

### What Is the MSA Chillgard 5000?

The MSA Chillgard 5000 is a fixed refrigerant monitoring system intended for mechanical equipment rooms and other suitable non-hazardous commercial or industrial spaces.

Unlike individual point detectors installed throughout a room, the Chillgard 5000 uses a centralised sample-draw arrangement.

Air is drawn from selected monitoring locations through sampling tubing to a central instrument for analysis.

MSA offers configurations supporting 4, 8 or 16 sampling points, allowing monitoring arrangements to be adapted to the layout of a facility.

The monitor uses photoacoustic infrared (PAIR) technology to measure supported refrigerants.

According to MSA's product documentation, its key measurement characteristics include:

- A minimum detection level of 1 ppm for supported refrigerants.
- A measurement range of 0–1,000 ppm.
- Multiple selectable refrigerants from an internal gas library.
- Three configurable alarm levels.
- Analogue and digital communication options for integration with other systems.

These are manufacturer specifications rather than guarantees of detection performance at every location within a plant room. Actual performance depends on the refrigerant, sample-point arrangement and operating conditions.

MSA also offers a separate Chillgard 5000 Ammonia Monitor. The refrigerant monitor discussed here should not be assumed suitable for ammonia detection.

### How Does the Chillgard 5000 Work?

The Chillgard 5000 uses an aspirated monitoring system.

A pump draws air from each sample location through tubing to a central manifold and sensing module.

The instrument analyses the air using photoacoustic infrared technology.

When infrared light passes through the sample, molecules of a compatible refrigerant absorb energy at characteristic wavelengths.

This absorption produces a small pressure change that can be detected by the instrument's acoustic sensor.

The resulting signal is used to determine the refrigerant concentration.

The monitor compares measured concentrations with configured alarm thresholds and communicates relevant readings and status information through its available outputs.

Because the instrument samples air from several locations, the position of each sampling point is critical.

A sample point located away from a potential accumulation area may not detect a release as quickly as one positioned near a credible leak source.

Sample-line length, airflow and the number of monitoring points can also influence the time taken to identify a developing leak.

### Key Capabilities of the MSA Chillgard 5000

#### 1. Low-Level Refrigerant Detection

MSA specifies a minimum detection level of 1 ppm for supported refrigerants.

This sensitivity can be useful for identifying relatively low concentrations of refrigerant in sampled air, potentially allowing maintenance teams to investigate leaks before substantial refrigerant loss occurs.

However, a 1 ppm detection capability at the instrument does not mean that every leak in the room will immediately be detected.

Sampling locations must be selected according to the refrigerant characteristics, potential leak sources and room airflow.

#### 2. Monitoring from Multiple Sample Points

The Chillgard 5000 is available with 4, 8 or 16 sampling points.

This makes it suitable for consideration in plant rooms containing multiple chillers or several potential leak locations around a single installation.

Rather than installing a separate analyser at each monitoring point, the system brings air samples to a central instrument.

This arrangement can simplify access to the main monitoring equipment for inspection and maintenance.

MSA's installation guidance recommends at least two sampling points per chiller, positioned near potential leak sources. This is product-specific manufacturer guidance, and the final arrangement should reflect the installation's risk assessment and design requirements.

#### 3. Multiple Refrigerant Selection

The Chillgard 5000 supports the selection of multiple refrigerants from its internal library.

MSA describes configurations that allow up to six refrigerants to be selected, with the target refrigerant adjustable in the field.

This flexibility can be relevant where different refrigeration systems operate within the same facility.

However, the refrigerant used by each installation must be checked against the current manufacturer compatibility information.

Not every refrigerant or refrigerant blend should be assumed to be supported.

#### 4. Configurable Alarm Levels

The monitor provides three alarm levels, commonly described as caution, warning and alarm.

These can support a staged response to increasing refrigerant concentrations.

For example, an initial alarm might notify the facilities team to investigate a developing leak, while a higher-level alarm could initiate additional actions specified in the site's safety strategy.

The appropriate thresholds and responses depend on the refrigerant, applicable requirements and system design.

Alarm settings should not be selected solely on the basis of the monitor's measurement range.

#### 5. Building Management System Integration

For commercial buildings and large industrial facilities, refrigerant monitoring often needs to integrate with existing building management or control infrastructure.

The Chillgard 5000 offers communication and output options including:

- BACnet and Modbus communications.
- 4–20 mA and 0–10 V analogue outputs.
- Internal alarm relays.

These interfaces allow the monitoring system to communicate readings, alarms and relevant status information to compatible equipment.

This is particularly useful in facilities where engineering teams manage refrigeration, ventilation and other building services through a central platform.

#### 6. Diagnostics and Maintenance Features

The Chillgard 5000 uses a modular design incorporating components such as the pump, manifold and sensing module.

MSA also identifies built-in diagnostics, event logging and calibration functions intended to support servicing.

For maintenance teams, these features can provide useful information about instrument condition and help identify issues requiring attention.

Routine inspection, [calibration](https://www.shawcity.co.uk/service-and-calibration) verification and sampling-line maintenance remain necessary in accordance with manufacturer instructions and the site's maintenance procedures.

#### 7. Remote Display and Entryway Monitoring

MSA offers a compatible Chillgard 5000 Remote Display that can be installed at the entrance to a monitored area.

The display provides information such as refrigerant concentration, alarm status and diagnostic conditions.

This allows authorised personnel to review the monitor's reported status before entering a mechanical equipment room.

The remote display also incorporates audible alarm functionality and can be connected to the main monitoring system.

Its suitability as part of an entryway warning arrangement depends on the applicable safety requirements and the installation design.

### Where Can the Chillgard 5000 Be Used?

#### Chiller Plant Rooms

Chiller plant rooms are a principal application for the Chillgard 5000.

These spaces may contain several chillers, compressors, valves and refrigerant pipework connections, creating multiple potential leak locations.

A multi-point sampling system can monitor selected areas around the equipment from a central instrument.

Sampling locations should reflect the refrigerant's behaviour, likely release points, ventilation patterns and any obstructions.

#### Commercial HVAC Installations

Large commercial buildings, hospitals and office developments often rely on central refrigeration systems.

Facilities teams may need refrigerant monitoring information to be available through the building management system, particularly where plant rooms are not continuously occupied.

The Chillgard 5000's communication options and remote display capabilities can support this type of arrangement.

#### Refrigerant Storage Areas

Refrigerant storage and transfer activities can present different release scenarios from those associated with operating chillers.

Where suitable for the refrigerant and area classification, monitoring points may be considered around identified storage or transfer locations.

The design must account for potential release quantities, ventilation and how refrigerant could accumulate.

#### Industrial Refrigeration Facilities

Industrial facilities may operate refrigeration systems supporting manufacturing, processing or other temperature-controlled operations.

The Chillgard 5000 may be considered where the refrigerant is compatible and the installation is within the product's specified operating conditions.

For cold stores, [food production](https://www.shawcity.co.uk/food-industry-gas-detection) facilities and other specialist environments, suitability should be confirmed against the particular refrigerant, room arrangement and applicable requirements.

### What Should Engineers Consider Before Specifying Refrigerant Monitoring?

Selecting a refrigerant monitor requires an assessment of the installation rather than relying on a detector's sensitivity or number of sample points alone.

Important considerations include:

**Refrigerant type:** Confirm the refrigerant or blend, its safety classification and compatibility with the monitoring technology.

**Monitoring objective:** Establish whether the system is intended for occupational safety, early leak detection, statutory leakage detection or a combination of these purposes.

**Room layout:** Identify potential leak sources, equipment locations, ventilation arrangements and areas where refrigerant could accumulate.

**Sample-point placement:** Consider refrigerant density, airflow, possible obstructions and the manufacturer's sampling-line requirements.

**Alarm strategy:** Determine the appropriate alarm thresholds, notification arrangements and protective responses.

**System integration:** Confirm the required building management system interfaces, relays and communication protocols.

**Environmental conditions:** Check temperature, humidity, ingress protection and other installation requirements.

**Maintenance:** Establish responsibilities for inspection, calibration checks, sampling-line integrity and periodic testing.

The Chillgard 5000 is specified by MSA for non-hazardous areas. It should not be assumed suitable for installation in a classified hazardous area.

Applications involving flammable refrigerants require particular attention to refrigerant compatibility, the fire and explosion risk assessment and any hazardous-area requirements.

### Refrigerant Monitoring and UK Regulatory Considerations

Refrigerant monitoring requirements depend on the refrigerant used, the equipment's charge, the installation and the risks identified.

Several regulatory and technical frameworks may apply.

#### F-Gas Legislation

In Great Britain, F-gas legislation requires operators of specified refrigeration, air-conditioning and heat pump equipment to undertake leak checks where applicable.

For relevant equipment containing fluorinated greenhouse gases equivalent to 500 tonnes of CO₂ or more, an automatic leakage detection system is required.

The system must alert the operator or responsible service company when a leak is detected and must be checked at least once every 12 months to confirm that it functions correctly.

Where a qualifying leakage detection system is installed, the permitted interval between periodic equipment leak checks may be extended.

However, automatic monitoring does not remove the obligation to carry out required leak checks, repair leaks or maintain appropriate records.

Northern Ireland operates under a different F-gas regulatory framework from Great Britain, so installations there must be assessed against the applicable requirements.

The Chillgard 5000 may contribute to a facility's refrigerant leakage detection arrangements, but its suitability for meeting a particular statutory requirement must be established for the specific equipment and installation.

#### BS EN 378: Refrigerating Systems and Heat Pumps

The BS EN 378 series addresses safety and environmental requirements for refrigerating systems and heat pumps.

It covers matters including machinery room arrangements, ventilation, refrigerant detection and protective measures.

The relevant requirements depend on factors such as refrigerant classification, charge, occupancy and system design.

A monitoring system should therefore be specified with reference to the applicable parts and edition of BS EN 378.

Installing a particular refrigerant monitor does not, by itself, establish compliance with the standard.

#### COSHH and Workplace Safety

Where refrigerants present hazards to health, employers must assess and adequately control exposure under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (COSHH).

Refrigerant releases may also create oxygen-deficiency risks through displacement of air, which must be considered within the wider workplace risk assessment.

#### DSEAR and Flammable Refrigerants

Where flammable refrigerants create relevant fire or explosion risks, the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations (DSEAR) may apply.

Employers must assess the risks and determine appropriate protective measures, including ventilation, equipment selection and hazardous-area classification where required.

The Chillgard 5000 Refrigerant Monitor is intended for non-hazardous areas and should not be assumed suitable for installation within a classified hazardous area.

### Conclusion

Continuous refrigerant monitoring can help facilities teams identify developing leaks, reduce unnecessary refrigerant losses and improve awareness of conditions within mechanical equipment rooms.

The MSA Chillgard 5000 combines low-level photoacoustic infrared detection, multi-point air sampling, configurable alarms and building management system connectivity.

Its suitability depends on the refrigerant, room layout, monitoring objective and applicable safety requirements.

For refrigeration engineers and facilities managers, a properly designed monitoring arrangement can provide useful information for maintenance and safety management while supporting the wider measures required for effective refrigerant containment.
