# MSA FL5000 Applications: Where Is It Used and Why?

**Shawcity**|15 October 2026

![](https://www.shawcity.co.uk/hubfs/fl500-1-v1-1.png)

Industrial flame detection needs to reflect the fires that could realistically occur within a facility. Fuel characteristics, detection distance, field of view, environmental conditions and the position of equipment all influence the suitability of an optical flame detector.

The [**MSA General Monitors FL5000**](https://products.shawcity.co.uk/products/msa-fl5000-msir-flame-detector) is a multi-spectrum infrared (MSIR) flame detector designed for industrial applications where hydrocarbon fire detection, coverage and false-alarm discrimination are important considerations.

Its capabilities make it relevant to several demanding environments, including refineries, offshore installations, compressor stations and fuel handling facilities. Understanding these applications helps engineers assess where the detector may be appropriate and what needs to be considered before specification.

### What Is the MSA FL5000?

The FL5000 is an optical flame detector that monitors infrared radiation associated with a fire.

It uses a multi-spectral infrared sensing array and advanced signal-processing technology to distinguish flame characteristics from other radiation sources.

MSA specifies a spectral range of **2–5 μm** and a published maximum detection distance of **95 m for an n-heptane fire** under defined conditions.

The detector also incorporates heated optics, continuous optical-path monitoring and configuration and diagnostic capabilities through MSA's Flame Connect application.

These features support the detector's use in industrial environments, but its suitability depends on the specific fire hazard and installation conditions.

### [How Does the FL5000 Detect Flames?](https://www.shawcity.co.uk/news/flame-detection-fundamentals)

Hydrocarbon flames produce infrared radiation with characteristics that can be analysed by optical sensors.

The FL5000 monitors multiple regions within the infrared spectrum. Its electronics process information from the sensing array using artificial neural network (ANN) technology to help distinguish actual flame signatures from potential interference.

The detection process can be described as:

**Flame radiation → Infrared sensing → Signal processing → Detection decision → Alarm output**

Potential interference sources in industrial environments include hot equipment, welding and reflected sunlight.

MSA's signal-processing approach is designed to improve discrimination against these sources. However, detector performance must still be assessed against the conditions present at the installation.

The FL5000 also uses **Continuous Optical Path Monitoring (COPM)**, which performs an optical and electronic integrity check every two minutes.

### Where Is the FL5000 Used?

Oil and Gas Production and Offshore Installations

Oil and gas facilities can contain processing equipment, pipework, separation systems and other infrastructure handling flammable hydrocarbons.

Credible fire scenarios may involve releases of gas or liquid hydrocarbons followed by ignition.

Offshore installations present additional challenges because equipment is often concentrated within relatively complex layouts, with structures, pipework and process modules potentially obstructing the detector's view.

The FL5000's MSIR technology and false-alarm discrimination capabilities make it relevant to these applications.

However, detector positioning must consider potential fire locations, structural obstructions, coverage requirements and environmental exposure.

Refineries and Petrochemical Processing

Refineries and petrochemical facilities handle a variety of flammable materials across processing, transfer and storage operations.

Potential fire scenarios depend on the substances involved and the conditions under which they are handled.

Optical flame detection may be considered around relevant process equipment and other areas where a developing flame needs to be recognised by the fire and gas system.

The FL5000's multi-spectrum infrared sensing and signal processing can support detection in environments containing potential sources of optical interference.

Before specification, engineers should establish the relevant fuels, credible fire sizes, distances and detector coverage requirements.

The presence of multiple fuel types also makes it important to check manufacturer performance data rather than assume identical detection performance for every substance.

Compressor Stations

Compressor stations are used in gas transmission and industrial processing to increase or maintain gas pressure.

They may contain compressors, valves, pipework and associated equipment handling flammable gases.

Potential fire scenarios include ignition following a release from relevant process equipment.

MSA identifies compressor stations as an FL5000 application.

When assessing detector suitability, engineers should consider the location of potential releases, equipment geometry, ventilation conditions and possible obstructions.

Detection distance and field of view should be evaluated against the actual protected area rather than relying solely on the maximum published range.

Fuel Loading and Transfer Facilities

Fuel loading areas involve the movement of flammable liquids between storage systems, vehicles or other equipment.

Loading arms, hoses, connections and transfer points may be relevant locations when identifying credible release and ignition scenarios.

The FL5000 can be considered for flame detection where the fuel and fire characteristics fall within its demonstrated capabilities.

For these applications, the detector's field of view and the possibility of vehicles or equipment obstructing the optical path are important design considerations.

A changing operational layout may also affect the coverage available from a fixed detector position.

Aircraft Hangars

Aircraft hangars are another application identified by MSA.

These environments may involve aviation fuels, aircraft maintenance activities and large enclosed spaces containing equipment and potential obstructions.

The FL5000's long-range detection capability may be relevant where a suitable line of sight can be established.

However, aircraft positioning, maintenance equipment, building geometry and potential sources of optical interference must be considered.

Published detection ranges should be checked against the relevant fuel, fire scenario and required sensitivity.

### What Makes These Applications Challenging?

Although the operating environments differ, several factors consistently influence flame detector performance.

**Fuel characteristics:** Different fuels produce different flame signatures. The detector's demonstrated performance must be relevant to the credible fire scenarios.

**Detection distance:** A manufacturer's maximum range is established under defined conditions. Actual coverage depends on the application.

**Field of view:** Detection capability varies with angle and distance. A detector must be oriented to provide suitable coverage of the identified hazard.

**Obstructions:** Pipework, vessels, structures and mobile equipment can interrupt the optical line of sight.

**Environmental exposure:** Weather, contamination, condensation and other conditions can affect optical detection and maintenance requirements.

**Interference:** Welding, hot equipment and other radiation sources should be considered when assessing detector performance.

These factors make application-specific coverage assessment essential.

### What Should Engineers Consider Before Specifying an FL5000?

Specification should begin with an assessment of the facility's credible fire scenarios.

This includes identifying the fuels present, potential ignition locations, relevant fire sizes and areas requiring protection.

The FL5000's published performance data can then be assessed against the required detection distance, field of view and response characteristics.

MSA identifies performance testing across **22 fuel sources**, providing useful information for comparing the detector with particular industrial hazards.

Engineers should also consider installation geometry, hazardous-area requirements, system integration and maintenance access.

The detector's diagnostic features and COPM self-check can support ongoing monitoring of instrument condition, while functional testing and maintenance remain necessary according to the manufacturer's instructions and site procedures.

### FL5000 Within a Wider Fire and Gas Detection Strategy

Flame detection and combustible gas detection address different stages of a potential incident.

Gas detectors monitor for specified gases before or independently of ignition, while optical flame detectors respond to characteristic radiation associated with a fire.

Depending on the risk assessment, both technologies may form part of a facility's fire and gas protection arrangements.

The FL5000 can provide flame detection inputs to an appropriately designed system, alongside other detection and protective measures.

System design should establish how alarms are communicated and what actions are required following detection.
