Remote Safety Made Simple: Perenco UK’s Offshore 4G Gas Detection Trial

Perenco UK Ltd (PUK), a major North Sea gas operator, partnered with Shawcity to trial Blackline Safety EXO8 and G7C detectors offshore.

The challenge

Offshore oil and gas operations present significant safety and communication challenges. Workers may be exposed to hazardous gases while operating in isolated environments, and traditional gas detectors do not always provide the connectivity required for remote teams to monitor alarms and worker status in real time.

Perenco UK wanted to establish whether connected portable and area gas detection equipment could communicate reliably with the available 4G network in the North Sea. This would create opportunities for remote monitoring on platforms, maintenance vessels and normally unattended installations during decommissioning activities.

The solution

Having previously deployed Blackline Safety equipment at Perenco’s Bacton gas terminal, Shawcity supplied the company with Blackline Safety G7c wearable gas detectors and an EXO 8 portable area monitor for an offshore trial.

Both devices provide live gas readings, location information and emergency alerts through the cloud-based Blackline Live platform. The G7c also offers lone-worker features such as fall detection, missed check-in alerts and an SOS latch, while the EXO 8 can monitor up to eight gases simultaneously.

The outcome

The trial confirmed that the detectors could successfully connect to the offshore 4G network and transmit emergency alarms remotely. Perenco also reported that the equipment was straightforward to operate and highlighted the EXO 8’s battery performance.
