Hydrogen sulphide (H₂S) is well known for its characteristic rotten-egg smell. In workplaces where H₂S may be present, including wastewater treatment, oil and gas operations, sewers and confined spaces, that distinctive odour can create a misleading assumption: if you can smell the gas, you will know when there is a problem.
Smell cannot provide a dependable warning of H₂S exposure, nor can it tell you whether an atmosphere is safe.
Why is H₂S smell unreliable?
The human nose can detect hydrogen sulphide at very low concentrations. UKHSA gives an approximate odour threshold of 0.008 ppm. However, sensitivity to the smell varies between individuals; some people are more sensitive to H₂S odour than others.
There is also an important distinction between detecting an odour and measuring exposure.
Smelling H₂S cannot tell a worker what concentration is present. In the UK, H₂S has a Workplace Exposure Limit (WEL) of 5 ppm over an eight-hour time-weighted average and 10 ppm over a 15-minute reference period. These values need to be assessed using appropriate measurement methods rather than human perception.
The reliability of smell also changes as exposure increases. UKHSA states that at concentrations above 100 ppm, olfactory paralysis can occur. At this point, the loss of odour perception makes smell particularly unsuitable as an indicator of continuing exposure.
When the smell 'disappears'
A worker may initially notice the characteristic smell of H₂S and later find that they can no longer detect it.
That change should not be interpreted as evidence that the gas has dispersed.
The concentration in the atmosphere may have changed, but the person's ability to perceive the odour may also have been affected. Without atmospheric measurement, there is no reliable way to distinguish between those possibilities using smell alone.
This is particularly important when making decisions about continuing work, entering a potentially hazardous area or determining whether an area is safe to re-enter.
Measuring what your nose cannot
Where a risk assessment identifies the potential for H₂S exposure, hydrogen sulphide detection provides objective information about the atmosphere.
The appropriate monitoring strategy depends on the task and how the potential release could affect workers.
Personal and portable gas detection can provide monitoring around the worker during maintenance, inspection, confined-space entry and other activities where conditions may change. Fixed gas detection serves a different purpose. Where a site has an identified ongoing risk, permanently installed detectors can provide continuous monitoring at selected locations and can form part of a wider alarm and control strategy.
These approaches are not interchangeable. The appropriate system should be determined by the risk assessment, potential release points, worker location, ventilation, process conditions and the response required if H₂S is detected.
Smell is an observation, not a measurement
The practical lesson is straightforward: noticing the characteristic rotten-egg smell may indicate the presence of H₂S, but the strength or disappearance of that smell cannot establish the concentration present or confirm that conditions are safe.
Where H₂S is a foreseeable workplace hazard, the risk assessment should establish how the atmosphere will be monitored and how workers will be warned if conditions change.
