Shawcity Celebrates 50 Years with Golden Anniversary Staff Celebration

Shawcity recently marked an incredible milestone, celebrating 50 years in business with a special anniversary event dedicated to the people who have helped shape the company over the past five decades.

Held as part of the company's golden anniversary celebrations, the event brought together colleagues from across the business to reflect on Shawcity's journey since its founding in 1976, celebrate its achievements, and recognise the people, partnerships and values that have remained at the heart of its success.

The celebration welcomed several special guests who have played an important role in Shawcity's history. Former long-serving employee Peter Gunter, who dedicated almost 20 years to the business, joined the celebrations alongside former Managing Director Paul Walton, who spent more than 35 years helping lead the company through significant periods of growth.

Also in attendance were valued industry partners from ION Science, including The Hive Technologies Group owner Duncan Johns and ION Science Managing Director Mike Hawes. Their presence reflected the long-standing relationship between the two companies and highlighted the importance of strong partnerships in driving innovation and supporting customers across the industry.

Making the occasion even more special were Shawcity founder David Chapman and his daughter, Helen Chapman. Their attendance provided a unique opportunity for employees to hear first-hand how the business began, from its humble beginnings in 1976 through to becoming one of the UK's leading independent suppliers of workplace health and safety monitoring solutions.

David and Helen shared stories from Shawcity's early years, including the unexpected origin of the company's name. Chosen almost at random from a catalogue, "Shawcity" simply stuck, and five decades later, it has become a recognised and trusted name throughout the industry. For many employees, it was a fascinating insight into the company's heritage and the foundations on which today's business has been built.

The afternoon also offered a journey through the evolution of monitoring instrumentation, particularly gas detection technology. Looking back at the equipment used in the early days of workplace safety and comparing it with today's advanced solutions highlighted just how far the industry has progressed over the last 50 years. It also served as a reminder of Shawcity's continued commitment to helping customers embrace new technologies and improve workplace safety.

Reaching a 50-year milestone is a remarkable achievement for any organisation, particularly an independent family-founded business that has continued to grow while remaining true to its core values of expertise, exceptional service and long-term customer support.
