Wednesday 22nd June saw the first of the 2016 seminars hosted by Shawcity, which offer an independent focus on key issues facing those who work in occupational hygiene, environmental monitoring and health and safety. The event, held at Wrag Barn Golf and Country Club, Highworth, focused on occupational dust monitoring, RCS and diesel fume.
Shawcity welcomed over 40 delegates on the day to hear from guest speakers including David Flower and Lynn Rogers, Occupational Hygienists from IOM; Nick Baxter, Breathing Apparatus Specialist from Health & Safety Laboratory and Nick Brown, Regional Sales Manager UK and Ireland from TSI Incorporated.
David Flower kicked off the day’s proceedings by looking at selecting the best dust monitoring equipment and techniques used to measure dust fraction, including workplace exposure limits and health effects.
The second presentation from Nick Baxter gave a detailed overview of respiratory PPE followed by a live demonstration showing fit testing with FFRED (FaceFit REspirator Demonstrator). Nick explained the importance of wearing the appropriate and correctly fitted protection and his demo unit dramatically showed what happens to lungs when the fit or condition is wrong.
After breaking for lunch and networking, the next presentation from David Flower discussed diesel engine exhaust emissions (DEEEs), the effects these have on health issues, the problems caused when accurately trying to monitor the fumes and emission guidance limits.
Nick Brown rounded off the day with a detailed presentation about environmental ambient particulate monitoring. Nick spoke about different environmental dust considerations, legislation and the types of monitoring used to measure particulates within a given environment.
After each presentation, Shawcity’s Product Specialist Managers Alex Graft and Dr. Steve Goodman hosted lively Q&A sessions, which prompted in-depth discussion from the audience.
The event was a huge success and delegate feedback confirmed the day was an insightful and engaging experience and a great opportunity to share knowledge about this aspect of the health and safety industry. Click here to view our picture gallery of the day.
