Matt Jordison, 18 - Apprentice Service Technician, Shawcity
Shawcity, based in Oxfordshire, are the UK’s leading supplier of monitoring instruments for the health and safety, occupational hygiene and environmental monitoring markets.
Our range of instruments monitor various parameters including: Gas, Sound, Noise, Vibration, Air Quality, Dust and Heat Stress.
Our customers include formula one teams, major car manufacturers, airline and rail companies, national museums, the Met Office, the NHS, government institutions, universities, national utility companies and some of the biggest global consumer brand names in the world.
As a company, we were looking to recruit a trainee to the service department in 2016 so we approached Swindon College’s Apprenticeship Team to see if they could help. They sent us details of several suitable candidates studying with them and at interview Matt impressed the team so much he was offered the position.
Matt is currently undertaking a Level 3 Apprenticeship in Electronic Maintenance and Electrical Principles, so he attends college one day a week and works four days a week in our in-house workshop. He has already gained a Level 3 BTEC Diploma in Engineering and is exploring the possibility of extending his study further after this course, with higher education options.
Very much part of the team, Matt works alongside Shawcity’s other engineers and technicians assisting with servicing, calibration, maintenance and repairs of our hire fleet and our customers' instruments.
Despite only being in the role for eight months, Matt has already undergone extensive training and will continue to build his product knowledge through attending further courses run by our partner manufacturers.
Matt says: ‘I chose the apprenticeship route as I wanted to get straight into the industry. I enjoy hands-on work and my role at Shawcity offers a lot of variety. With over 50 different instruments, which all use different types of technology, no two days are the same.
‘Although I enjoy working on all of the instruments, I particularly like working on the more complex Gas Clam landfill gas monitors. They are the highest value pieces of kit we have on the hire fleet, so to know that the team are happy I have been properly trained and am competent to work on them under supervision is a real confidence-booster.'
‘Looking ahead I’d like to progress in the Service Department here, whether that be within the workshop or out on the road perhaps getting involved with maintaining our customers’ fixed gas detection systems.’
